Motorola Q question.

Category: accessible Devices

I'm currently using a Motorola Q with Smart Hal, and have some questions I was hoping someone could answer. First of all, and this may sound ridiculous, but when you get text messages, how do you go about scrolling through them to figure out which one's you actually want to read and what you just want to delete altogether?
I would've thought logically it would've bee the bottom portion of the 5-way navigation button, but there have been several times when I've pressed that and it just decides I want the message opened and goes ahead and does it whether I wanted it to or not. Second, what keystrokes would you use with this particular phone as a tab or shift-tab function?

hi,
I do apologize I can't help you out, but I'm pretty sure someone had already answered your quessions. I just woner, how accessible is smart Hal? I am using Mobile Speak and find it very accessible, but I would also like to explore different options. Thanx.

can you use different screen readers with the motorolla q? or do you have to use a certain one? i noticed the q is available with u s cellular, and that's who we have. thanks, Shea

The Q works with either Smart Hal, or Mobile Speak Smartphone.

I did end up geting the q. i do like it a lot. i don't have the problem you have with the text message. are you sure it's not just reading the subject line? on mine anyway, i use the roll thingy on the side of the phone to see which one i want to open, and if i want to open it i hit ok and if not i hit the um, i think it's left soft and then down to delete. anyway, probably no help but i tried. hehehe

Good evening Kelly. I unfortunately can't answer your questoin because although I am a mobile speak user I use symbian and pocket PC not smart phone. I would be interested to know why you switched phhones. I do know people like the q but haven't heard much about the pantek.

Post 8 by kelly (Zone BBS Addict) on Wednesday, 05-Mar-2008 21:49:03

I switched because the speach software was comeing out of the speaker in the back so everyone could hear MR voice.

i was gonna get the black jack 2, but it was one of the phones with singular that you have to buy the mobile speak for it at full price..which is not what my parents wanna pay for at the moment..the q was on an upgrade and mobile speak was at 89 dollars, not like 4 to 500...hopefully i got my dollar's worth I was a bit upset that i had to get the q cuz the blackjack2 came in red and i heard it's better. not sure lol, but I'll soon find out...

unfortunatly moto q is one of the phones that does not support speach during a call with neither screen reader smart hal or mobile speak. Is just the way the phone is...

well i heard it does if you get a bluetooth headset, that's what i heard but don't know if it's true

i'm seriously considering getting a q for my next phone, was wondering if anyone knows if the braillenote would be able to connect with it using bluetooth since i'm considering using mobil speak's braille display option if i can.

I would like to know this as well... I've tried time and time again with no luck.

Post 17 by Brooke (I just keep on posting!) on Saturday, 20-Dec-2008 1:01:50

I tried using aBluetooth headset with the Q to see if speech worked during a call, and it didn't.

Post 18 by Izzito (This site is so "educational") on Saturday, 20-Dec-2008 5:29:11

Even if you use a bluetooth headset it doesn't work that phone just simply doesn't do it hehe

Post 19 by Jesse (Hmm!) on Saturday, 20-Dec-2008 11:14:50

Nope. There is a deal with the audio driver in the phone. To put it in PC speak, it's not multi-channel, so it'll give you either the sounds from the phone, or the sounds from the telco, but not both. Palms have the same obnoxious problem.

Post 20 by Brooke (I just keep on posting!) on Saturday, 20-Dec-2008 11:28:30

But if the battery on the Q is low, and you're on a call, it talks and gives you the low battery alert. So if it has the capability of doing that, I don't get why it can't talk during a call?

lol, Brooke, i have wonderd the same hing. makes no sense to me.

I'm bringing this topic to the top, because I'm hoping you q users can give me advice.

There is currently a motorola q on craigslist for $75. Is it worth it? I still need to buy mobile speak of course.

Looking on phone scoop the classic moto q is nearly 4 years old. Would I be taking a big step back? Should I be patient and wait to buy the moto q9c or q9m?

Thank you so much. The seller says the phone is in mint condition. BTW, will msp read items on the memory card, so I can use this as a music player?

Post 23 by WillieTheWoof (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Wednesday, 15-Apr-2009 23:20:52

MSP will read items on the memmory card. AS far as weather to buy or not to buy it really depends on weather you like the phon and if you want to wait for better technology. Remember the q does not have wifi and if that is something you need then you will want to consider a phone with wifi. I use the nokia n82 and love the eas of how it works on the net.

For the person who posted about perchasing Smart Hal, I would strongly recommend not perchasing that. I chose the first time around to go with it over Mss, and in the longrun ended up regretting it.
It doesn't seem to read as much of the matterial on the screen depending on what software you're using, and isn't as accessible with as wide a range of programs as Mss, most likely due to the fact that it hasn't been on the market as long.
Also, if you choose to use it with Eloquence instead of the Orpheus speech engine which they recommend, you run a pretty high risk of the ound card drivers constantly crashing on your phone if you're using the Q, which I went through on a regular basis, because I tried using Orpheus and hated the way it sounded.

see, given that the moto q is an old version, i rather wait for newer technology and get the nokea 6650 as my other option or the N82 as my second option from at&t if i switch.
